The number of strings varies on folk harps from less than 20 to more than 40. The main difference in cross strung harp fingering is that fingers often depart from consecutive sequences: 1,2,3,4...4,3,2,1. Lap harps are much smaller than other types of harps, usually with fewer strings than harps which rest on the floor to be played. Over 30 years old, appraised at $1800 but needs 5 new strings. Early harmonica makers in German-speaking countries used the term mundharfe (mouth harp). However, if you are not intending to be a professional pedal harpist, stay away from pre-pedal lever harps because they will limit your choices in terms of all the possibilities open to lever harpers.

With the Anglicisation of the Irish nobility, the traditional harpers became minstrels and street musicians reciting poetry and singing folk songs to the accompaniment of their harps. If the harpist moves the A pedal to the sharp position, all of the harp’s A strings play A sharp. Almost all South American Countries have their own versions of harps. The collection of virtually all of our harp music occurred during those same two hundred years’ time, so the chances are very good that a tune you want to play was collected from a traditional fingerpad player, so please do not feel inferior in any way if you decide to play your wire–strung harp with your fingerpads.
